2 Kings 6:15, 17 - When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early the next morning, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city. "Oh, my lord, what shall we do?" the servant asked...And Elisha prayed, "O Lord, open his eyes so he may see." Then the Lord opened the servant's eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.
A co-worker and sister in Christ was once plagued with so much fear she thought God had abandoned her. She entertained all sorts of imaginings. "There must be sin in my life" or "I must not have enough faith," she considered. The trials were incessant; the troubles were insuperable. She simply had a difficult time truly seeing God respond in her situation and hearing God speak truth to her doubts. Much like Elisha's servant, her problems seemed to mount up like a mighty army surrounding the city and let's just say, fear is the front chariot leading the charge.
"Oh, my lord, what shall we do?" Isn't that usually the million dollar question for the day? In the heat of battle, trusting in God's great and precious promises comes across as second guessing what's behind door number three on a game show. We forget too quickly who's in control of our circumstances. That's where reminders are very important. Elisha had to remind the servant just how big God is compared to the army before them. His eyes needed a prayerful adjustment. God not only showed Himself to be a worthy opponent, but a "refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble" (Psalm 46:1).
In the heat of her circumstances, this co-worker asked God to reveal to her the magnitude of her fears. "God, just how big are my fears?" was the cry of her heart. After much prayer, God did show her and to her great surprise, it was no bigger than a WASP! Unseen, our problems can get the better of us. But when we ask God to open our eyes, we find those same problems aren't as big as they appear. Yeah, intimidating at best, but never too big for an army of God's to subdue! He will provide the army; you get out the wasp spray!
