THE MOTIONS OF THE FIRST NOEL

Despite the festive folly of the Christmas season, my good days aren’t always my best. If it’s not hurry here, scurry and do that, I am up in arms with family issues and concerns. It’s enough to just go through the motions and hope the day ends with a “ho-ho-ho” and not a “bah-humbug!” I am not Scrooge, but it wasn’t until I sat down and realized I was in danger of going through the motions of the First Noel.

Every year, the world is reminded of the blessed birth of Christ. Christmas cantatas and sacred holiday hymns herald the miracle of a child born to take away the sins of the world. A gift wrapped in an unassuming package of hay and stubble. Jesus who abandoned deity for a season and adorned humanity’s frail form gave himself as the greatest offering. This was His gift to us on the First Noel.

Yet instead of slowing the pace to reflect on this sacrificial gift, we jump into hyper speed. We simply go through the motions of the season. The moments that were once precious are now few and cumbersome and considered a waste of time. Eventually for some, they end up resenting the season as an infringement. What’s forgotten is the true reason for the season is not what we can get on December 25th, but what was given on that First Noel. He is the gift that keeps on giving all year round. And no amount of gift wrap or treks to the store for just the right gift for the relative that has everything can compare!

Take a moment to enjoy the gift of the First Noel. Without it, Christian or not, we can find ourselves in danger of being robbed of this season’s true meaning. Don’t end up going through the worldly motions and resenting the Christ-like moments.

You have all been a blessing to me. You have visited this blog and allowed me to encourage you with God’s truth. May He grant you peace in the moment, relief from the motions and hope in a Savior. Please accept this gift. May it remind you to never go through the motions of the First Noel.

Merry Christmas!
