Life's journey is full of short reflections. And with school out for the summer, I'm feeling a bit hopeful about growth. About a week ago, I watched my "crazy little man!" walk across a stage to receive his commencement certificate and I thought, "Oh dear, where did the years go?" And though I'm just as proud as any mom would be to watch her child successfully complete elementary school, I can't help but to reflect and pray about the things that will mold and shape his future.
I don't know about you, but I'm praying for a memorable summer before he transitions into middle school. Although he's always been involved in some structured activity since he was six, who knew summer programs ran scarce for tweeners? In our area, opportunities abound for Kindergarteners through 5th graders, but fall short for those in the 11-13 year old category. It's no poor reflection on those who make up summer curricula, but from VBS to day camps, younger children are just more impressionable and less stressed over their future AND everything is just plain boring to a tweener (at least that's what comes out his mouth after 15 minutes of being outside).
As my son (and I'm sure you can attest for your tweeners) grows out of his childish ways, it's important to remember our role as parents. We are called to train UP our children so when they grow UP, they won't forget what we taught them (Proverbs 22:6). I may not be able to hang with our son 24-7 to be his sole source of entertainment, but I am with him in the decisions he makes and in the actions he takes. We reflect on their future. We pray they make mature decisions and remain "confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work...will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ" (Philippians 1:6).
Just thought I'd share a short reflection on growth.
